Blood Products

At Conversant Bio, we offer a wide variety of human peripheral blood samples from a number of different indications, including normal patient populations. We also provide patient annotation for our blood samples including age, race, gender, smoking history, alcohol history, primary diagnosis, treatment history, known mutation statuses, and more.  To learn more about our individual peripheral blood products browse the items below:

Fresh, Whole Blood

We are able to prospectively collect fresh, whole blood from normal and diseased patient populations within our nationwide network.  All samples are collected under IRB-Approval and follow HIPAA guidelines.

Up to 40 mL of disease-status blood and 50 mL of normal-status blood can be collected per patient, and shipped the same day as the draw for overnight delivery.

Each prospective collection is custom-designed to meet the researhers' needs, as far as specified collection tubes, aliquot volumes, sample processing (to plasma, serum, buffy coat, or PBMCs), patient diagnosis, and any other inclusion/exclusion criteria.

We are proud to offer highly-annotated data on these samples, including age, race, gender, smoking/alcohol history, primary diagnosis, and treatment history.

Additionally, Conversant Bio is able to provide ELISA viral testing on all prospective blood collections.

 Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs)

We are proud to offer both fresh and cryopreserved PBMCs to researchers.  These mononuclear cells, mainly consisting of monocytes and lymphocytes, are obtained by gradient centrifugation using Ficoll. The cells are aliquoted and cryopreserved at -80 C in a manner that maintains post-thaw cellular viability. Our banked PBMCs are available in 1.0mL aliquots from a variety of indications.

All samples are annotated based on age, race, gender, smoking/alcohol history, primary diagnosis, treatment history, post-thaw cell viability, and % viable cells.

Additionally, Conversant Bio is able to provide ELISA viral testing on PBMC samples.

Key Applications:
  • drug testing and drug target discovery
  • biomarker identification/validation
  • assessing immune response
  • genetic studies
  • cell isolation studies

Plasma

Plasma is the liquid, non-cellular portion of blood. It contains a variety of proteins, nutrients, ions, hormones and clotting factors.  Our inventoried plasma samples are processed to plasma within 2 hours of collection by centrifugation at 2000Xg for 15 minutes at 4°C, using an acceleration and deceleration of 2 and 2, respectively.  The samples are then aliquoted into 0.5 mL and cryostored at -80 degrees Celsius.

All samples are annotated based on age, race, gender, smoking/alcohol history, primary diagnosis, and treatment history.  Additionally, we are able to prospectively collect whole blood and process it to plasma for custom orders.

Conversant Bio is able to provide ELISA viral testing on plasma samples.

Key Applications:

  • drug testing and drug target discovery
  • biomarker identification/validation
  • assessing immune response
  • genetic studies
  • cell isolation studies

Serum

Serum is the liquid, non-cellular portion of blood lacking clotting factors. It contains a variety of proteins, nutrients, ions, and hormones.   Our inventoried serum samples are processed to serum within 2 hours of collection by centrifugation at 2000Xg for 15 minutes at 4°C, using an acceleration and deceleration of 2 and 2, respectively.  The samples are then aliquoted into 0.5 mL and cryostored at -80 degrees Celsius.

All samples are annotated based on age, race, gender, smoking/alcohol history, primary diagnosis, and treatment history.  Additionally, we are able to prospectively collect whole blood and process it to serum for custom orders.

We are able to provide ELISA viral testing on serum samples.

Key Applications:

  • drug testing and drug target discovery
  • biomarker identification/validation
  • assessing immune response

Buffy Coat

Mononuclear cells, mainly consisting of monocytes and lymphocytes, are obtained by gradient centrifugation using Ficoll. These cells are aliquoted and frozen at -80C in a manner that maintains post-thaw cellular viability. Our banked buffy coat samples are available in 0.3 mL aliquots from a variety of indications. All samples are annotated based on age, race, gender, smoking/alcohol history, primary diagnosis, and treatment history.

We are also able to prospectively collect whole blood and process it to buffy coat for custom orders.

Additionally, Conversant Bio is able to provide ELISA viral testing on buffy coat samples.

Key Applications:

  • assessing immune response
  • genetic studies
  • cancer stem cells

Matched Sets

Researchers have an increasing need for matched tissue and plasma/serum sets. At Conversant Bio, we offer a variety of matched sets to meet your project needs.

Our matched sets consist of FFPE blocks from a variety of disease indications, matched with 5mL or 2mL plasma aliquots.

The resection dates on the FFPE blocks are less than a year old.  Newer blocks are essential for researchers to obtain quality DNA without the degradation issues that can occur in older FFPE blocks.

Furthermore, CBio's FFPE blocks are resected and fixed using U.S. guidelines with three quality checks by U.S. board certified pathologists.  The first quality check occurs at the point of fixation, the second quality check occurs as the sample comes through CBio's doors, and the last quality check occurs before the sample is released to the researcher.  This last check is to ensure that the block meets the researchers needs as far as tumor dimension, necrosis, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and fixation.

The plasma is handled and processed with circulating tumor DNA studies in mind.  These plasma samples are collected in EDTA tubes and processed within 2 hours of collection, the plasma is processed by centrifugation at 2000Xg for 15 minutes at 4°C, using an acceleration and deceleration of 2 and 2, respectively.  The samples are then aliquoted and cryostored at -80 degrees Celsius.

Our matched sets are annotated by age, race, gender, smoking/alcohol history, primary diagnosis, treatment history, resection date, stage, TNM, tumor tissue type, tumor disease status, harvest/resection site, tumor size, and percent necrosis.  Additionally, we are able to offer pathology reports as accompanying data points for these samples.

Key Applications:
  • drug testing and drug target discovery
  • biomarker identification/validation
  • assessing immune response
  • toxicology
  • genetic studies
  • cancer stem cells
